Shape Notes to Gospel: The Story of Southern Quartet Singing

The synergy between Anglo-Celtic and African traditions in the American South led to the development of diverse and dynamic styles of singing, both sacred and secular – including shape-note hymnody, Afro-American spirituals, folk vocal music has in turn had a huge influence on a variety of secular bluegrass, rock, and modern gospel music.

In this themed presentation, the band will trace the development of roots group singing in the American South, through these various styles and forms. They will illustrate the tale with slides taken from old photographs, snippets of field and commercial recordings dating back over 100 years and performing musical examples live.
