A.L.Lloyd was probably the most single important influence in the British folksong revivals. A committed communist all his life he spent a number of years in Australia working as a stockman and general labourer where he heard a few Australian songs and on a whaling vessel in the Antarctic. A journalist and broadcaster he wrote a number of books on folkmusic. However, in recent years bert has come in for some fairly heavy criticism in regards to his collecting methods.

Themed Concert - Linthead Stomp: Cotton Mills, Radio & Old Time Music

New Holland Honey Eaters

The Band will tell the story of how old-time musicians working in the southern cotton mills transformed their traditional music into what was to become bluegrass and country music. The story will be told from the studio of modern-day radio station WYOY, where a local history program is in progress. Songs and tunes will be presented as flashbacks to programs on the same station when it was operating in the 1930s, and the narrative will be illustrated impressionistically with slides, audio and video clips.

Lute Concert - Susan King ( lute) and Vanessa Ransley ( Voice)

George Town Yacht Club - Esplanade North (key code 6 on your map)

A delightful concert of traditional English and Scottish folk songs and lute music.

Songs range from medieval through to 17th Century ballads as well as by John Dowland ,the Elizabethan court lutenist whose songs were mede so popular a few years ago by Sting.

Susan will also play solo 16th century lute music from France, Uk and Italy.
